In this interview, Arshan catches up with Houston rapper, Maxo Kream, during KTO’s recent trip to NYC. In 2018, Maxo dropped his debut album, Punken, quickly gaining notoriety for his honest lyricism & storytelling. The project featured his song, “Roaches”, which currently has over 31 million streams on Spotify alone. After signing with Roc Nation in 2019, he released his major label debut, Brandon Banks, which included features from Travis Scott, Megan the Stallion, ScHoolboy Q, & A$AP Ferg. Maxo followed up that project with his album, Weight of the World, which featured his collaboration with Tyler, the Creator, “Big Persona”. During the summer of 2022, Maxo dropped Weight of the World (Deluxe), with added appearances from Babyface Ray, Anderson .Paak, & more.
During their conversation, Arshan & Maxo discuss “Big Persona”, Rick Rubin showing Maxo’s music to Tyler the Creator, & why he doesn’t pay for features. Maxo shares his funniest memory w/ Tyler before revealing that he went to the same schools as Don Toliver & Travis Scott. He describes the influence that moving to the suburbs had on his music, explains the “real Houston experience”, and gives a shout out to James Harden. Maxo shows love to upcoming Houston rappers like Bby Kodie, Guapo, & TSF 1 Punch, before discussing his song “Fetti”, which Arshan says is the best song to be put on SoundCloud. He talks about recording “Fetti” with Carti & reveals that he still keeps in touch with Carti & Uzi.
Maxo explains the unexpected challenges of being a rapper before talking about breaking up a fight during one of his shows. They discuss basketball, Maxo’s love for animals & lion documentaries, & wanting to go swimming with sharks.
