Today off the coast of Newport Beach our friends at Newport Coastal Adventure and Pacific Offshore had an epic and RARE encounter with a pod of four Sperm Whales, as they cruised leisurely along the Orange County coast, about 30 miles from Newport Harbor.
This is the largest whale in the toothed whale family, reaching lengths of over 50ft in the males and weighing in at over 100,000lbs. They are a renowned deep diver, foraging well below 6,000ft from the surface for their favorite food- giant squid!
As you'll see, this whale's square-shaped head, rounded hump-like dorsal fin, wrinkly skin and single blowhole positioned far forward and on the left side are all unmistakable characteristics of the Sperm Whale.
Sperm Whales can be found all over the Pacific Ocean, but due to their offshore deep water habitat, and often lengthy dive times of up to 1hr or more, they are difficult to find and photograph off our California coast. But when they appear, it is something so magical & special to encounter that passengers onboard will remember this whale-watching adventure forever!
