In 2014, the Bureau of Labor Statistics identified nearly 16,000 workers in the private industry as victims of workplace-related traumas and injuries, 67% of which were female. Meanwhile, among the nearly 5 thousand fatal workplace injuries that occurred, 403 were said to have been victims of homicide. Those numbers cast a light on a huge issue in the labor sector.
The big question - just how big of a role does training play in preventing workplace violence?
Overall, workplace violence is still considered rare occurrences, despite some highly-publicized cases that have been reported recently. Nevertheless, the government has remained clear about the ethical and legal obligations that employers have in establishing a workplace that’s free of violence and threats. Simply put, the employer’s role is critical.
As far as workplace safety goes, having preventive measures is still the most logical point to start when dealing with workplace violence. However, the employer must understand that ‘plans’ alone will not eliminate the issue.
Training must be done for employees to quickly identify and control any forms of workplace violence. The policies in place should be well-communicated and the supervisors must aggressively implement behavioral protocols.
When it comes to the issue of workplace violence, it’s critical for the whole team to be on the same page in regards to zero tolerance. If violence does occur, knowing how to react could mean the difference between life and death.
