John Prescott, the former Labour deputy Prime Minister, has died at the age of 86.
His family shared that he died peacefully yesterday to the sound of jazz music at his care home, where he had been living with Alzheimers.
They also shared this message for a beloved husband, father and grandfather.
It reads: "John spent his life trying to improve the lives of others, fighting for social justice and protecting the environment, doing so from his time as a waiter on the cruise liners to becoming Britain’s longest serving Deputy Prime Minister."
Prescott had spent 40 years as the MP for Kingston upon Hull East and had been made deputy Prime Minister under Tony Blair in 1997.
