Deputy President Paul Mashatile's spokesperson Vukani Mde has confirmed that the VIP protection unit involved in the assault of three motorists was indeed assigned to the deputy president at the time of the incident. It is, however, unclear who the men were escorting at the time. The South Africa Police Services has confirmed that the victims have been identified and offered trauma counselling.
