Yes! The hills are alive with the sound of music! (badoom-TSCHHHH)
This was a completely spontaneous idea we had - just play some tunes in a farmhouse somewhere in the Bavarian hills just north of the Alps on the border between Germany and Austria. Being in that setting makes playing music feel so inspired and communal - it reminds me of my grandparents, who had a 'parlor' in their house in Albany, NY. The 'parlor' was a combination living room/music room. There was no TV, only a piano and organ. Nowadays everyone has a TV in their living room as the central "thing", but I think a piano should be central to all households. Or a record player. Anyway, more about this concert:
We dug up some great jazz standards, and prepared a few of Gwen's originals for you all.
I played piano - she sang and played some guitar and recorder (ha).
The main sound for the recording comes from the Zoom H4, which was pointed more towards Gwen's vocal amplifier. I also recorded the piano into Logic Pro X with MIDI, so that I could try to mix in some better piano sounds with the live keyboard sound... this was actually kinda tricky to line both piano parts up perfectly, and also the tuning wasn't exactly the same. This is why the piano has a 'chorus' effect on it - I spent two hours trying to fix it and then gave up. Sorry everyone.
Later I overdubbed vibraphone and electric bass. I used my new Rode NT1 condenser microphone for the vibes (just a mono track).
We felt very inspired playing these songs and hope that you enjoy listening to them!
