Mike Oldfield's famous song from the album Tubular Bells I is best known as the theme of the movie "The Exorcist". Tubular Bells I was one of the first "new age genre" albums and was not written for the movie. The director, William Friedkin, chose the song as the theme for "The Exorcist". "The Exorcist" was the fictionalized story from the 1971 novel written by William Peter Blatty loosely based on a real exorcism case performed by the Catholic Church on a boy in St. Louis in the 1940's. An expert on the Devil and exorcisms said the movie got it wrong as, "They departed from the ritual in the most stupid and reckless manner ... They tried to fight the Demon hand to hand instead of relying on the power of God." The Catholic Church has a strict rule on exorcism: Only specially trained priests can perform the ritual, and lay people are not allowed to participate because of their own personal weakness to "argue with the Devil". As Father Merrick in the film warns his assistant, "the demon mixes truth with lies to confuse you"; your only protection is to focus on the prayers and "above all, do not listen". Happy Halloween!!
