Creations that fused Chinese and Western elements from designer Taoray Wang graced the stage in New York on Saturday during New York Fashion Week.
Wang presented designs from her Taoray Wang Fall/Winter 2016 collection during the show.
As one of China’s most celebrated and accomplished designers, Wang is considered to have pioneered women's fashion in China. Her namesake brand, Taoray Wang, aspires to bring her collections to women around the world who appreciate high-end fashion.
Some of the show’s attendees thought that Wang’s unique blend of the traditional and the modern was ready for the international stage.
"But I think what was so exciting was it completely dispelled any myths about Chinese tailoring or Chinese design. Because it was truly an international collection. You could have shown it anywhere. You were showing in New York, but you could have been showing it in Paris, or Milan, or anywhere you wanted to, because it was a real triumph. Congratulations!" said Simon Collins, dean of Parsons The New School for Design.
Wang discussed how she applies her inspirations from Chinese culture to her designs.
"In my opinion, Chinese culture tends to express profound meaning without saying anything. Therefore, I don't think it's necessary to flaunt anything in my brand. Your temperament will tell others who you are. The female temperament and exquisite design should not be too overt or flamboyant. The unique temperament of Easterners is to tell everything without words, but it’s difficult for foreigners to do this," said Wang Tao.
