Vegetative propagation is often utilised when seed is unavailable, of poor quality, or cannot be germinated. It is also used when individual plants need to be replicated for conservation. Mandy Thompson of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Cranbourne Gardens, explains the process of preparing semi-hardwood cuttings in the conservation nursery. Hygiene and careful plant handling are emphasised to maximise success and maintain disease-free plants.
