Chile and Argentina have ordered some 3,000 residents to evacuate the area near the Copahue volcano in the south on their shared border. Authorities in both countries issued a red alert, predicting that the Copahue volcano could erupt imminently. The volcano has seen increasing seismic activity in recent weeks but has not erupted yet. Chile also issued a red alert last December after Copahue began spewing ash and gas. Copahue is a stratovolcano and it is one of the most active volcanoes in Chile.
This animation illustrates the composition of a stratovolcano and how it erupts.
