The early 20th century saw increased interest in Antarctic exploration, with European nations launching expeditions to explore the unknown continent. Explorers like Ernest Shackleton were driven by the allure of adventure and the potential for national fame. Shackleton joined Robert Falcon Scott's National Antarctic Expedition in 1901, aiming to reach the South Pole. The team faced severe challenges, including inadequate clothing and poor transportation methods. Shackleton showed signs of physical distress and was sent home early. Shackleton, still bitten by the Antarctic bug, then raised funds for his own Antarctic expedition, which set sail on the Nimrod in 1907. The team made significant progress but was ultimately halted by severe blizzards, forcing them to turn back just 97 miles from the South Pole. Shackleton's final ambitious plan to cross Antarctica via the South Pole was disrupted when their ship, Endurance, became trapped in ice. The crew survived extreme conditions, making an epic journey to South Georgia Island for rescue. Shackleton's leadership was crucial in keeping the team together and ensuring their survival.
