Sunflowers make a bold statement if you are lucky enough to have them in your garden. In this video, I will share a method of drawing and painting a sunflower. You can play with the shapes of the petals and have them twist and turn. I incorporated all the warm colors of the color wheel with Cad Orange, Cad Yellow, Yellow Ochre, a golden color, and even a little touch of Burnt Sienna for the petals in the back.
I create a color swatch for every painting to see what colors will look best together and appeal to me.
I love playing with the center of the flower, blending Burnt Uber, Burnt Sienna, and for the edges to show depth and shadow, Prussian Blue. (Be careful with Prussian Blue it can easily take over your painting and is quite staining and hard to lift with a dry brush).
I have chosen to use mainly primary colors and allow the red and yellow to mix to create a beautiful hue of orange that I couldn’t buy in a tube. This is primarily a wet-in-wet technique to blend sunflower colors, including golds, oranges, yellows, and a bit of burnt umber. This makes a beautiful sunflower color palette.
My paper today is a beautiful and thick @arches, Cold Press, link below, 140# with a lot of texture.
I am also helping the paint to blend by “pulling” the paint specifically in the petal I dab or dot in the red paint and then go back with a dryer brush with less water and help pull the paint into the yellow petal with the tip of my brush.
I thought making this little practice painting available for you in my Etsy shop might be fun!
You watched me paint it, and I priced it very attractively for you!
What fun, right? Your purchase will help me and YOU! What's included?
* painting from tutorial signed dated and tutorial episode name
* my pre-recording swatch I created with colors for reference (all handwritten)
* more pre-work, showing brushstrokes, descriptions
These are all my behind-the-scenes notes and prework.
Every painting is on different papers, depending on what I was teaching, various sizes, and meant for supporting you, although it can be framed as well as a fun piece!
