Mark Twain is one of the most famous American writers. He was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. His father was a lawyer, and his mother was a schoolteacher. At first he wanted to be a lawyer like his father. But after he started practicing law, he realized that this career wasn't for him. So he went back to school and got a degree in engineering from Auburn University. Then he worked as a reporter for several newspapers and magazines, including The Hartford Courant and The Atlantic Monthly. In those days, reporters took notes and wrote stories about what they saw or heard. They didn't have computers or digital cameras. If a reporter wanted to take pictures, he would have to use his camera phone or film a movie with Super 8 film! Today's reporters can use their computers to take photos, record videos, and send email messages. Mark Twain also became an author when he started writing books like "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" (1876), "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" (1880), "The Innocents Abroad" (1869), "Roughing It" (1872), and "Pudd'nhead Wilson" (1894).
