With outfitting ready for wilderness travel, a bush plane dropped us off at a deep wilderness lake in the remote mountains of the Northwest Territories. We soon began carrying the canoe and wading a shallow creek before running rapids on Blackfeather Creek to reach the Mountain River. Fly in fishing was soon on our minds as we casted for wild trout - Dolly Varden and Arctic Grayling and saw wildlife. Our dog Buck was along for the journey and dog training to teach him about the canoe was key. Bushcrafter skills to butterfly trout made for a great primitive catch and cook and a delicious meal. We also did a little hunting for ground squirrel which we spit roasted over the fire. The scenery was incredible, with natural tufa springs, hot springs and epic wild camping every night.
It was after a commercial flight to the remote northern community of Norman Wells, Northwest Territories that we boarded the float plane. We had planned a 14 day trip on the Mountain River, reaching it through ancillary tributaries as mentioned.
Our crew consisted of me, my wife Tori, my brother Ted and his girlfriend Heather, but as you’ll see in this video, they would only be girlfriend and boyfriend for the beginning of the trip. Whitewater rapids were a consistent in this trip and we also basked in hot springs, hiked to waterfalls and enjoyed the epic country surrounding what is one of the most beautiful rivers in the world. This is part one of a two part adventure film documentary on our trip down this spectacular river.
