The Starý most (Old Bridge) in Bratislava is a historic structure that connects Bratislava city center with the Petržalka district.
History
• Original Construction: The bridge was originally opened in 1890 as the Franz Joseph Bridge, named after the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph. At that time, it served as a railway bridge, linking Bratislava with the then Kingdom of Hungary. During World War I, it was renamed Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge.
• Interwar Period: After the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, the bridge was renamed Štefánik Bridge in honor of General Milan Rastislav Štefánik.
• World War II and Aftermath: The bridge was destroyed during World War II and later reconstructed and adapted as a combined road and railway bridge. From that time onwards, it became known as the Starý most (Old Bridge).
Modernization and Reconstruction
Between 2013 and 2016, the Starý most underwent a significant reconstruction. The original bridge structure was entirely dismantled and replaced with a modern steel bridge. The reconstructed Starý most officially reopened on December 19, 2015.
