The Gonzagas in Mantua and the Art of Andrea Mantegna.
The focus of this class is to examine the Italian and Northern European visual culture from the 15th century to the sixteenth century, to study major monuments and artists, such as Mantegna, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titan and also Holbein, Clouet, Cranach, Altdorfer, and Pieter Bruegel. In addition to exploring canonical paintings, sculptures, and architecture, the course will also look at patronage, the dynamics of the city-states/countries making the Italian peninsula and the Low Countries, and the multicultural aspects of art production.
