Like the ice pack, the forest continues to melt, according to the space agency. Nearly 100 million hectares have disappeared in less than 20 years. Fires to create arable land, the use of charcoal and rampant urbanization are all factors that take precedence over forest preservation. And if Europe and North America are seeing their forest cover increase, this masks the global floristic impoverishment of forests, transformed into monocultures to meet economic needs.
In Uganda, where the forest has virtually disappeared, in Sweden, where old-growth forests have been replaced by plantations of young trees for economic reasons, and in Brazil, where the situation is attracting worldwide attention, young people are taking action: demonstrations, planting, fighting in the street, in the forest or on the networks... Leah Namugerwa, Lan Pham, Linnea Backman and Leonilson Da Silva are mobilizing to preserve what's left of our forests.
