Pulitzer Center grantees Noah Friedman-Rudovsky and Sara Shahriari report from Bolivia on the pollution of Lake Titicaca, documenting the contamination and environmental destruction of the lake as well as the impact of regional water pollution on surrounding communities.
The contamination of Bolivia's Lake Titicaca stems from upstream urban pollution, largely resulting from the migration of the Bolivian people from the countryside to the city of El Alto. The extensive population migration causes widespread regional water contamination because the city infrastructure cannot keep up as the urban population rapidly increases. This results in severe waste management issues and health risks within El Alto and pollution in downstream locations, such as Lake Titicaca.
