Steeped in history, the Liverpool Seamen's Orphan Institution lies derelict surrounded by the beautiful, and quite pristine, landscape of Newsham Park. Visited by Queen Victoria herself in 1886, the Institute was formally opened on 30th September 1874 by her fourth son, the 'Sailer Prince' Leopold for the orphaned children of Liverpool's drowned. When the orphanage closed, it became a hospital and then a lunatic asylum before closing in 1997. Although there are currently plans afoot to utilise this building once again, it's 'condition' doesn't effect the way it's character adds to an already beautiful place! Definitely worth a visit for a stroll!
