Hey, Will?
Yo.
I go to a private college. Do I have free speech rights here?
Probably. But they won't be First Amendment rights.
You only have First Amendment rights at public colleges. Your state school, First Amendment rights.
Private college? You are hoping that your private college has written down expressive rights in its student handbook. Then you've got some free speech rights.
But even then, courts have been lousy on this lately. They say that private colleges can change those rights as they see fit.
So you got to demand them.
You should check out that student handbook before you write that fat tuition check or take out that loan, because not all private colleges give you free speech rights.
You got to go to a religious school. Sometimes they don't give you free speech rights. Go to a small
school that places other values above free speech, No free speech rights.
So long story short, probably, but definitely double check and double check before you enroll.
Rock on.
