Did you know that no one won a gold medal in the first modern Olympics held in Athens in 1896?
This is because winners were awarded silver medals and an olive branch, while the second-place finishers received copper or bronze medals and a laurel branch.
It is not clear why gold was not awarded. Some say it was the tradition during the 1890s to award silver to the winners.
The second modern Olympics was even more unusual. Each event had a considerable degree of autonomy in deciding what to reward winners. Winners received trophies, cups, or other valuable objects instead of the now-standard medals. The most unusual was an umbrella awarded to the pole vault winner.
The tradition of awarding gold, silver, and bronze medals to the top three finishers began later, specifically at the third Olympics in1904 at St. Louis, USA.
