While Maui’s humpback whales can only be seen during certain months of the year, Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles can be seen every single day. Known locally as honu, these magical marine species are perhaps the most beloved in the Hawaiian Islands.
With an estimated lifespan of around 80 years, Maui’s honu are considered an integral part of our history and culture. In fact, they are considered by many as aumakua, or family guardians. While other sea turtle species can also be spotted in Hawaii, including Leatherback, Hawksbill, Loggerhead and Olive Ridley, Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles are by far the most common.
When snorkeling with sea turtles in Maui, remember that touching, feeding, chasing or harassing them in any way is not only frowned upon, but against the law. By swimming calmly and slowly, and allowing our Marine Naturalist certified guides to lead you to the best sea turtle snorkeling locations around the island, you may even find that they don’t mind approaching you!
Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles can often be seen eating algae, resting at a local turtle cleaning station, cruising near the shoreline at some of Maui’s most popular beaches, and even resting on shore!
Once in danger of extinction, the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle population has seen an impressive increase due under protection in the U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973. Since 1978, the honu population has increased by approximately 50%.
