A three-year clinical trial led by Dr. Edwin Kim at the UNC School of Medicine has demonstrated that sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) is a safe and effective treatment for peanut-allergic children aged 1 to 4. The trial found that SLIT, which involves a small amount of peanut protein absorbed under the tongue, was highly effective in treating peanut-allergic toddlers. After completing the treatment, almost 80% of participants could tolerate 15 peanuts without allergic symptoms. Moreover, 63% of toddlers maintained their protection against peanut allergy three months after stopping the treatment. Peanut SLIT offers a promising approach for early intervention in peanut allergies, with a focus on safety and efficacy.
