Hey guys it's been over 5 years since you saw the seed grown Trifoliate orange trees (Poncirus Trifoliata) aka the hardy orange. They've grown a lot since then however due to their slow growth rate they are still small plants. In today's video we go through the process of repotting and a bit of pruning.
Many people don't realise that you can grow citrus in the UK. Although many people who do grow citrus struggle (especially up north). Often the winter cold kills them or soggy soil leads to root rot. Step up the trifoliate orange. The hardiest citrus and the only deciduous citrus! This is undoubtedly the best suited citrus species for the UK. It is the trachycarpus Fortunei Palm tree of the citrus world.
Native to northern China and Korea the plants native range is pretty much exactly the same climate as the UK.
My trees have grown very scrubby and bushy. They are essentially wasting energy becoming bushy plants. Therefore they're not growing in height very quickly so they will take longer to become trees. In the wild this is a great defence tactic from grazing animals. A small bushy plant compact with many thorns isn't worth the risk. But in my garden they do not need to waste their time growing this way. The trees will grow much taller and more in a tree form rather than a bush with some careful pruning. So after 5 years of growing wild it's time to welcome them to the life of a modern tree.
