Flounders belong to a larger group called flatfish. There are 800 different species of flatfishes known worldwide. The trait that links them together is that they have eyes on only one side of their heads. This happens through a process called metamorphosis. Webster Dictionary defines this process as a "great change in appearance or structure”. A well-known animal that goes through metamorphosis is a tadpole turning into a frog.
