In yet another milestone, The Indian Army and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Tuesday successfully conducted the launch of the new generation of Akash missile from Pokhran Field Firing range in Jaisalmer district. This is the second test of ‘Akash-Next Generation’ (Akash-NG) in just three Months.
Hello and welcome back to your own channel Indian defense analysis where we bring to you all the latest development happening in the defense sector. Today we are going to analyze in detail about the recent test of Akash-NG missile and why it was tested from Jaisalmer?
As you might be aware, Akash is India’s first indigenously designed, developed and produced air defence system capable of engaging aerial threats. It is the cheapest surface to air missile ever produced in the world with supersonic powered intercept. The development of the Akash-NG was approved in September 2016 with the funding support of around ₹500 crores.
Akash-NG is the upgraded version of existing Akash Missile. Akash NG missile will have all next generation components with extended range. The missile is meant to be used by Indian Airforce with an aim to intercept high maneuvering areal targets with low RCS such as drones and stealth fighter planes.
In a major milestone in the ongoing surface-to-air missile (SAM) program, DRDO had successfully conducted the first test of ‘Akash-Next Generation’ (Akash-NG) missile from a defense facility off Odisha coast on 25th Jan 2021. The missile intercepted the target with pin-point accuracy. The launch met all the test objectives by performing high maneuvers during the trajectory. The performance of Command and Control systems, onboard avionics & aerodynamic configuration of the missile was successfully validated.
On Tuesday again The upgraded Army version missile has been fired from a heavy mobility truck. As per an official source quoted in the report published by Times of India , “The surface-to-air missile was fired on Tuesday. The Akash-NG (new-generation) missile will be used by the Indian Army and Indian Air Force to intercept high-manoeuvring low radar cross-section aerial threats. The missile intercepted the target with textbook precision. The launch met all the test objectives by performing high manoeuvres during the trajectory. The missile is capable of engaging in multiple targets in real time. The missile has an intercept range of 40km with the missile guidance system being more accurate now along with the fire control system. The performance of the command and control system, on-board avionics and aerodynamic configuration of the missile was successfully validated during the trial. Several range instruments including radar, EOTS and telemetry systems were used while monitoring the entire path of the missile during the test launch.”
During the test launch, the entire flight path of the missile was monitored and the flight data was captured by various range instruments. The multi-function radar was tested for its capability of integration with the system. The range of the missile is from 1.8 to 2.5 Mach. The missile could be fired from tanks which are stable or even from moving surface life warships and trucks.
The Akash-NG system has been developed with better deployability compared to other similar systems. The missile is solely designed by DRDO and has been produced by defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The test launch was carried out by a combined team of DRDO and India Army.
The testing of the missile from Jaisalmer district could be intended for deploying the missile defense system on western borders against Pakistan.
