In this video, I wish to address a common eye condition that a lot of us do not really talk about but can be damaging to the eyes in the long run. If we look around us, we can tell one or two persons we know who are always in the habit of picking mucous off their eyes. Some of these people can be so engrossed in this action that they are not able to do any other thing until they are done picking their eyes to their satisfaction. And in most cases, they end up leaving their eyes red and swollen. This is because they are now so addicted to it.
For those who do not know, this condition is called eye mucous fishing syndrome. It is a condition that affects countless individuals around the world, causing discomfort and inconvenience. So my goal in this video is to shed some light on the causes of this condition. I will also in this video suggest possible ways of resolving this problem so that those who suffer from it can find relief and improve their quality of life. So stay tuned, don’t go anywhere, we will be right back.
So Eye mucous fishing syndrome is a condition where individuals repeatedly and involuntarily rub or pull on the mucous that accumulates in the corners of their eyes. This mucus is primarily produced by glands in and around the eye to provide lubrication, protection, immune defense, and a cleaning mechanism. So what I’m trying to say in essence is that the eye naturally produces mucus, and so the more you remove them, the more the eye makes new ones. However, it is understandable that when the mucus accumulates excessively, it may lead to the urge to remove them thereby leading to conditions like eye mucous fishing syndrome. So now lets look at the causes of excessive mucus in the eye which in turn leads to this mucus fishing;
The most important cause is Eye allergies, this is also known as allergic conjunctivitis, it is a common condition that occurs when the eyes react to certain substances in the environment. Substances such as pollen, dust, mold, smoke and so on. These substances can trigger an immune response in the eye, causing the eye to release histamine and other inflammatory substances. This histamine causes the sensation of itching and watery eyes leading to a range of uncomfortable symptoms. And that’s why before you know it, the individuals begin to rub their eyes uncontrollably and all of these lead to an increased production of eye mucous, this mucus most times appear like strings which can be very uncomfortable and irritating thereby leading to the urge to fish them out by all means. Other causes of eye mucus production include dry eyes, eye infections and habitual behavior. By habitual behavior I mean that some persons just develop the habit of fishing for eye mucus due to stress, anxiety or simply as a nervous tic and this habitual behavior can be difficult to break.
One of the biggest concerns about fishing for eye mucus is that the persons involved do so all manner of objects ranging from dirty fingers, pointed objects and other unsterilized items and these not only introduce germs into the eye, they also reduce the smoothness of the eyeball thereby leading to a major eye problem in the long run.
So, how can we address this condition and provide relief to those affected by it?
One of the ways is by Identifying and Addressing the Underlying Causes:
It is essential to identify and treat any underlying causes of excessive eye mucous production. Allergies can often be managed with antihistamines or by avoiding the substances that trigger the allergic reactions. Dry eyes may require artificial tears or other lubricating solutions.
In cases of eye infections, prompt medical attention is crucial to prevent complications. Treating the underlying infection can help reduce mucous production. For individuals who engage in eye mucous fishing as a habit, behavioral therapy, can be effective in breaking the cycle of this behavior.
Stress reduction techniques and relaxation exercises can also help manage the anxiety or stress that may trigger this habit.
Public awareness campaigns like what I’m doing right now can also play a significant role in reducing the prevalence of eye mucous fishing syndrome. By educating individuals about the potential harm caused by this habit, we can encourage early intervention and treatment.
And finally, if you are seriously concerned about the excessive mucus produced in your eyes, kindly see your eye doctor before you use any medications
