This 1985 series is the TVB adaptation of the "Dreadful Melody" (六指琴魔) novel by Ni Kuang (倪匡). It is a very popular novel as it has been adapted in many films and TV series. I haven't read the novel myself, but the reviews of the 1985 series indicates that it is a very loose adaptation by TVB with many plot changes and character changes. As a kid, I liked this series and watched it many times. It is due to the beautiful actresses in the cast which I will go into later.

The series stars Shek Sau (石修) and Lawrence Ng (吳啟華). I enjoyed both of their performances. But it took me a while to get used to Lawrence Ng playing the role of a hero... The supporting cast included Jimmy Wong (王書麒) who was just starting his acting career, Francis Ng (吳鎮宇) who was coming into his own, and the reliable Dick Liu (廖啟智). Veteran Kwan Hoi San (關海山) put in a great performance as the "Six Fingered Demon Lute".

But what made this a much loved series is it starred three stunning actresses in Yammie Nam (藍潔瑛), Sheren Tang (鄧萃雯), and Elaine Chow (周秀蘭). All three were born to wear the wuxia costumes. I really enjoyed Sheren Tang's performance and loved her character heaps. Her character grew and developed as the story went on. I felt that Yammie Nam's character started out strong but diminished as the story went on. Elaine Chow's character didn't develop much at all. But still the eye candy on screen kept me invested in the series.

The main theme song "Stride to the Clouds" is a very catchy theme song sang by Michael Kwan. He has very good vocals and always delivers good songs for TV series. Anyway, enjoy...
