Genary Osipovich Korganov (Génari Karganoff / Генарий Осипович Корганов) was a Russian composer of Armenian descent. His works are influenced by Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky.
This nocturne is another fantastic rare gem by an obscure composer. After listening to so many obscure classical pieces over the years, (most of them ranging from being somewhat pleasant to dreadfully bland), it’s always a delight to encounter something that truly shines and resonates. There is an indescribable beauty in that moment of discovery, like that simple joy a young child would feel when they stumble upon a peculiar seashell washed up on the shore. Just when you think you’ve heard every piece and composer worth listening to, another gem shows up! I look forward to more of these moments in the future.
What a passionate Nocturne this is! The voicing is especially challenging in the middle section, but extremely rewarding. I especially love the change in mood at 2:11. I just wish I had 3 hands to cover the base line, melody and the accompaniment so my right hand doesn’t have to jump around like a maniac. As always, I couldn’t help but improvise some subtle melodic alterations when the theme is brought back.
