What happens if you are made to stay on the bench for a long time in an IT company?
Basically 'bench' period is a time period where an employee is hired by a company, but not assigned to any projects within that company.. either because there are no open positions available in ongoing projects or some new project might be in the pipeline for which that employee might be a good fit for you.
Being on the bench, is like being paid, without any work and hence experience. While it gives the satisfaction of being in a job, it is like termite, which kills your market value slowly and you won’t realize, it till you are out of a job and no one hiring you due to lack of experience.

A strong bench is a piece of evidence that the firm has ready resources and can begin the project immediately. But having too many resources on the bench doesn't reflect well either. It would mean employees are under utilized, and this would impact the profitability of the firm.
