(4 Mar 2015) Bulgaria and Azerbaijan agreed to increased bilateral cooperation in energy on Wednesday, as Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov in Sofia.
Addressing journalists following the signing of bilateral agreements, Aliyev stressed the importance of European energy markets to Azerbaijan, and said several initiatives had been proposed with a view to making Bulgaria a "transit country" for exporting gas to Europe.
Bulgaria is seeking new sources to diversify its energy supplies and reduce its dependence on Russia, which currently supplies most of its gas.
Borisov said the country remained keen to restart the so-called Nabucco pipeline which starts from the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) which runs from Azerbaijan to Europe via Turkey, and then construct "Nabucco-West" which, it is proposed, will run from the Turkish-Bulgarian border to Austria.
