The figure 8 knot is one of if not the most used sailing stoppers knots. It is easy to tie, provides a decent sized stopper and is relatively easier to untie after load has been applied.
When tying the figure eight knot it is important pull it really tight, with stiff modern ropes the knot can have a tendency to untie itself if it is only loosely tightened.
