Weaning from mechanical ventilation is the process of reducing ventilatory support, ultimately resulting in a patient breathing spontaneously and being extubated. Weaning procedures are typically initiated only after the underlying disease process that required mechanical ventilation has significantly improved or has been resolved.
In addition, the patient should have adequate gas exchange, proper neurological and muscular status, and stable cardiovascular function. Weaning indices are objective criteria for predicting patients and readiness to maintain spontaneous ventilation. Some respiratory mechanics, gas exchange, and breathing pattern parameters have been proposed as useful predictors of weaning outcome that could guide clinicians in determining the best time to discontinue mechanical ventilation.
Dr. Raymond Dominic Savio, discusses in detail about the classification of weaning, pre-requisites and prediction parameters for weaning from mechanical ventilation.
