(15 Apr 1977) RR7715B GHANA AFTER 20 YEARS
It is 20 years since the British colony of the Gold Coast
was granted independence and became Ghana. The
architect of independence was Kwame Nkrumah. In
fact, Nkrumah was more than that - he was the torch
bearer of black rule for all Africa with a dream to steer
his brother nations to freedom and unity as a "United
States of Africa". Not only did his personal lust for
glory and power turn that dream sour, it also brought
about his own downfall as more and more of his
people saw their country's resources squandered
and opportunities for progress lost. This programme
traces Ghana's turbulent infant years of nationhood
and examines the country today under its military
government.
