Breaking News: Oscar Pistorius released on parole 11 years after killing Reeva Steenkamp
Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, convicted of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, has been released on parole after serving more than half of his 13-year and five-month sentence. The former athlete, known as the "blade runner," shot Steenkamp through a door, claiming he mistook her for a burglar. Under South African law, offenders can be considered for parole after serving half their sentence.
Pistorius will face strict parole conditions until 2029, including home confinement during specified hours, alcohol prohibition, and media communication bans. Therapy to address gender-based violence and anger issues is also mandated. Steenkamp's mother, June Steenkamp, accepted the decision but emphasized her family's pain. Pistorius, a double amputee, gained fame as an athlete, winning gold at the Paralympics and competing in the London Olympics in 2012. Despite his high profile, the correctional services department assured him equal treatment.
The release prompts renewed reflection on justice for Steenkamp, with ongoing legal proceedings since the tragic incident in 2013.
