Because eating disorders are often viewed as "female" disorders, boys and men are underdiagnosed and often have trouble finding treatment. Therefore, parents and other caregivers must often educate themselves in order to get help for their loved ones. This webinar discusses common societal triggers in males, barriers to care, and effective treatments. Dr. Compte also talks about the differences in how males with eating disorders present in comparison with females and body image issue such the drive for muscularity.
Speaker Bio:
Emilio Compte, PhD is Research Assistant Professor in the School of Psychology at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Santiago, Chile, and also a Clinical Research Associate for the Comenzar de Nuevo in Monterrey, Mexico. His has published dozens of articles on eating disorders, body image, and muscle dysmorphia, including several on males and transgender people. Dr. Compte is Director of Annual Meetings for the Academy of Eating Disorders as well as a member of the editorial boards of the journal Body Image and the International Journal of Eating Disorders.
