“The Power of Student Journalism” is a discussion about how students across higher education spaces can connect with each other and others through scientific and creative writing. In her TEDxUofT presentation, Elizabeth Provost shares how student journalism empowers writers, builds technical skills, and ensures the student voice is heard across campuses. As the Editor-in-Chief of The Medium—a student-run publication that publishes weekly issues, magazines, and podcast episodes—Liz has experienced first-hand how writing brings the community together in moments of triumph and hardship, alike. She strives to encourage students to join the writing community while inspiring others to tune into our mediums as a looking glass into the future. Elizabeth Provost is a Russian-Canadian writer, editor, and aspiring art conservator. She is a fourth-year student at the University of Toronto studying Chemistry and Art History. Serving as Volume 48 and 49’s Editor-in-Chief of The Medium—University of Toronto Mississauga’s independent student-run newspaper—Liz creates a space for students to feel represented, inspired, and heard through writing, and where editors can be introduced to the newsroom dynamics. You can connect with Liz on her website: www.eprovost.crd.co. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
