This ambrotype by Mathew B. Brady (American, ca. 1823–1896) was donated to our collection in 1963. Because it arrived without a housing (it most likely had one when it was made), it gives us the unique opportunity to use it at a teaching tool to demonstrate how ambrotypes were made and why a black background was essential in the final housing of these objects.
Couple, ca. 1860. Ambrotype. George Eastman Museum, gift of Florence Mahon.
