Mar REGUANT from Northwestern University focused her keynote on “Successes in the renewable expansion: learning from Spain and Chile” at the FSR Climate Annual Conference 2022. Renewable costs have been dramatically declining, and so have the costs of integrating renewables into the grid. She discussed several dimensions along which the integration of renewables has been improving in several markets. She then focused on two case studies: Spain and Chile. In Spain, she showed how market design changes and operational improvement have reduced the incidence of renewable intermittency on the grid (Petersen, Reguant, and Segura, 2022). In Chile, she explained how a significant grid expansion allowed for the harvesting of solar power in the Atacama desert (Gonzales, Ito, and Reguant, 2022). The cost-benefit approach was used to discuss the merits of these two renewable expansions.
