Banded Iron Formation: Maroon and red Iron oxide jasper and metallic hematite. Finding the elusive BIF on Lake Erie shores. A look at identification of BIF vs. Orthogneiss, Mylonite, Paragneiss, highly altered Amphibolites, ordinary red chert that may or may not be associated with BIFs, plus, a look at some Gowganda tillite. The age of most of these rocks are counted in billions of years; they are among the oldest on Earth, transported by glaciers from the Laurentian basement and the North Atlantic Craton / Precambrian Shield and/or Archean crust.
Lakustrine cobbles and pebbles, rockhounding, beachcombing, amateur geology hobby, metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rocks, visual identification
I welcome commentary by any actual geologists! 😊 Or anyone...
Any day on the lake is a good day, eh ~
