Tropea is a true gem of Calabria, offering visitors a combination of natural beauty, historical attractions and excellent cuisine. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, a family holiday or an adventure, Tropea has something for everyone.
Tropea is a town of around 6,000 inhabitants on the Tyrrhenian coast of the Calabria region of southern Italy. According to legend, it was founded by Hercules, who rested here after completing his twelve labors. In fact, the town has been inhabited since 1000 BC. A bishopric was founded here in the 8th century AD, and it only began to flourish in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Calabrian cuisine is known for its spicy flavors, and Tropea is no exception. Local specialties include 'nduja, a spicy salami paste made from pork and chili peppers, which can be eaten spread on bread or as part of pasta dishes.
Another popular specialty is the cipolla rossa di Tropea, a sweet red and very tasty onion often used in salads and other dishes.
