Hey guys, welcome back to KnifeHog.com! Addison here and today I’ll be reviewing United Cutlery’s Bushmaster Survival knife model UC0212. Is this knife the ultimate survival tool it’s advertised to be? Let’s take a look!
When you’re out in the woods or hiking up a mountain, you want to know you've got a heavy-duty tool that can handle a multitude of cutting tasks, this is where United Cutlery swears the Bushmaster Survival knife flourishes. With an overall length of 15.38” and a blade measuring 9 ¾”, the Bushmaster is a large knife that is packed with more features than most knives of its class. The blade of this knife is constructed of 420J2 stainless steel and features a plain edge grind, clip point tip and saw back spine. 420J2 is a decent steel type for this knife due to the fact that it has excellent corrosion resistance and will not easily break from impact during hard use. The handle of this knife is composed of a black coated metal, which provides you with a sturdy grip. The handle also features a D-Ring guard, which protects your hand from slipping up toward the blade. This knife also features a survival kit, which contains a G.I. can opener, flashlight, animal snare and a compass that unscrews from the butt of the knife, which reveals an additional storage area. A Nylon sheath also comes included with this knife.
Overall, the Bushmaster is a decent survival knife. It’s large size and survival kit definitely make this knife useful during a camping trip but that’s about it. The 420J2 steel the blade is constructed of features poor edge retention, which in turn causes the blade to never become very sharp or hold a decent edge. Honestly, you’ll have to sharpen the blade quite often. With this in mind, a coarse sharpening stone should have been included with the survival kit. In addition to this, the saw teeth fitted on the spine of the blade will not really cut through wood very well because the back is not flat. Also, the handle of this knife has absolutely no texture and is hollow, which makes it extremely difficult to hang onto it wet or cold in any environment. The sheath is also a bit of a drawback of this knife as well due to its bulky and large size, which is not at all comfortable to carry on your belt.
We here at KnifeHog give this knife 1 out of 5 stars.
