In this video, I’m answering a question sent in by a tired mom on our Facebook Live Q&A Call.
This mom asked for advice and tips on relieving her baby's teething pain, because her baby was really uncomfortable and fussy.
If your child is teething, if your child is sick and they’re just not feeling well, the thing to do is just to keep up with your consistent sleep routine and make sure your baby has regular naps.
Keep up with your Peaceful Nightly Ritual. Keep up with your consistent bedtime. Because it will help your child to settle well.
The purpose of the Peaceful Nightly Ritual is to relax your child every evening. You’re doing activities that calm them like a warm bath and a baby massage. Cuddling them while you read books. Keep up with this consistent routine. Your child’s going to settle into it. They understand, even if they’re not feeling well, that it’s their nightly ritual. They understand what’s happening. “Oh, I’m starting to feel drowsy. I’m starting to fall asleep.”
So they can be comforted by their familiar sleep routine if they are in pain.
Stick to awake times
For your little one who’s 4 months old, make sure that he’s napping every 1.5-2.5 hours during the day. He may not, because he may not be comfortable. Give him the space and the opportunity to do so. If he’s not sleeping well, he may even need an extra nap.
Specific Tips for Teething Pain Relief for Babies
Washcloth soaked in chamomile tea:
I always recommend this. Take a soft washcloth and brew a cup of chamomile tea. Put the washcloth in the chamomile tea for 5 minutes or so. Then wring it out, put it in a ziplock bag and pop it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes.
When your baby is drooling or fussy, take the washcloth out and let your baby suck on it.
It has 2 purposes. Firstly, the cold will numb your baby’s gums which will feel so nice if they’re throbbing and swollen! The second purpose is that chamomile tea reduces inflammation.
Frozen Treats – Breastmilk Popsicles
A lot of babies also like frozen treats. Make breastmilk popsicles! Just take some of your pumped milk, put it in the little containers and put it in the freezer. I used to do this with my daughter as well.
If it’s a hot day or they’re having teething pain, you can just take it out. They put it on their gums. It feels really, really feels nice when their gums are throbbing and hurting.
Teething Toys and Teething Pacifiers
You can also just take a traditional teething toy and keep it in the fridge. They even have teething pacifiers that are specially shaped to hit your baby’s gums and really help.
Teething Necklace:
Also, moms can wear a teething necklace. It’s these great rubbery, soft necklaces – I used to have one. Some of them are pretty fashionable! You wear it so that any time you’re holding your baby or playing with your baby, they can chew on it. They love it because it’s yours and they want to grab it! It’s bright and colourful.
And also, it helps with teething pain.
Talk to your doctor about pain meds
If you’re looking for relief that’s a bit longer, then a lot of moms will turn to a pain reliever like Tylenol, Ibuprofen. So just talk to your doctor about what they recommend, the dosage, how often you can give it.
The great thing about teething is that it’s temporary. And remember, it’s only going to be a few nights or a few days that it’s going to bother your little one. If it’s getting to be a week or more, maybe it’s turning into more of a habit of sleep issues than a teething-related thing.
Good luck to you guys!
