Exclusive U.S. Screening December 17 - 31, 2020
Farhang Foundation and the UCLA Film & Television Archive are pleased to present THE DEER (Gavaznha) 1974, the long-suppressed Iranian classic by writer-director Masoud Kimiai and starring screen legend Behrouz Vossoughi, as part of the UCLA Archive’s Virtual Screening Room. Film screening features a special new introduction by Mr. Kimiai.
B&W, in Persian with English subtitles. 120 mins.
For two consecutive decades and in various Iranian critics' poll, The Deer has occupied the very top place as "the best Iranian film ever made."
Known for his rape/revenge drama Gheysar (1969)—which changed the course of Iranian cinema—director Masoud Kimiai (former assistant to Jean Negulescu and Samuel Khachikian) adds an explicitly political dimension to the story of his typically defiant characters.
