STORYLINE
Carpets and insulation hung from the gaping facade of a luxury hotel, where an explosion sheared the outer rooms off a 10-storey wing of the hotel, and rescuers dug on Friday for victims buried by the strongest in a series of deadly explosions.
Israeli officials said the death toll was at least 27 in a series of Egyptian resort bombings that bore hallmarks of al-Qaida.
Israeli rescue crews and some Egyptian Red Crescent workers continued rescue efforts at the Taba luxury hotel, where at least four people still were believed to be buried.
An Israeli military rescuer, told The Associated Press that finding more survivors was unlikely.
No credible claims of responsibility emerged immediately, though suspicion for the clearly coordinated car and suicide bomb attacks fell quickly on al-Qaida-inspired militants.
Two smaller blasts quickly followed in Ras Shitan, a camping area near the town of Nuweiba, 55 kilometres (35 miles) south of Taba.
The most devastating of the Thursday night strikes were at the Taba Hilton, where a car laden with explosives crashed into the lobby of the hotel and detonated, an Israeli official said on condition of anonymity.
There were reports of a second or third explosion within the hotel compound, one of which may have been caused by a suicide bomber.
The gutted, burned out shell of a vehicle rested inside a hotel meeting room, drawing considerable interest from officials on the scene.
Citing ongoing investigation, they would not say if it was the vehicle suspected of having carried the explosives.
Sheets and blankets tied to balconies on intact rooms of the hotel showed the frantic efforts by guests to flee.
Stairs of a fire-escape were twisted perpendicular to the building and the entrance gate was blown away.
By late on Friday morning, most of the rescue workers at the scene were Israelis, wearing military uniforms or red rescue jackets.
There were a few Egyptian security officials present.
Burned out cars were parked outside the hotel; cranes were available but not operating.
Officials initially reported at least 30 dead, but by Friday a senior Israeli Foreign Ministry official said 27 people were confirmed dead.
The Egyptian Interior Ministry issued a statement the death toll had reached 22.
An official at Taba hospital, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Associated Press 24 people were killed, including five Israelis, seven Egyptians and the rest foreigners whose nationalities were not immediately determined.
Most of the deaths were at the Taba Hilton.
