(2 Apr 2017) People across Iran flocked to parks and outdoor spaces on Sunday to celebrate the last day of the Iranian New Year, Nowruz.
Sizdah Be-dar, a Persian word meaning getting rid of number 13, is an ancient Iranian festival celebrated every year on the 13th day of Farvardin, the first Iranian calendar year.
The day, which is referred to as "Nature Day" in the official calendars, usually falls on April 1 but this leap year it has coincided with April 2.
Families spend the day picnicking along streams and rivers, in parks, woods or mountains.
Grilling chicken and meat, munching on nuts, playing cards, volleyball, badminton, throwing frisbees and flying kites are some common activities of Sizdah Be-dar.
Tying grass blades is another popular custom of the event, done mostly by young single girls who hope to find a good match or simply wish for good luck in life.
A philosophy behind the festival is to avoid the bad luck associated with number 13 in some cultures by not staying indoors on this day.
Relatively cold weather and rain in some parts of the capital did not keep Tehran residents from going out.
Sizdah Be-dar also is the end of 13 days of Nowruz holidays.
The nation will go back to normal life from April 3.
