Thirteen die as gunmen go on rampage
Unidentified gunmen went on a rampage in the Pakistani city of Karachi late on Sunday (11/6) and fired bullets at a commercial centre near the private residence of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. At least 13 people were killed in the latest outburst of violence in the city, including a three-year-old boy. Despite government appeals for peace, police in Karachi reported nine deaths on Sunday evening and four more on Monday morning. The gunmen reportedly drove in three cars to Boat Basin, a
recreational centre popular among Karachi's affluent population. The centre is located about half a kilometre from Bhutto's private residence. Bhutto was in Islamabad at the time of the attack. Witnesses said the gunmen began firing indiscriminately at passers-by and diners in nearby restaurants. The gunmen also fired a rocket at a navy recruiting office and opened fire on a mobile police unit before driving away. Police said this was the first incident of its kind in the neighbourhood, which is one of the best protected in Karachi.
