Thomas Frederick Mason Sheard (1866-1921) was a well-known British Orientalist, landscapist, and portraitist.
Sheard was born in Oxford, England, but moved to Paris in early age, where he studied art of painting under Gustave-Claude-Etienne Courtois and Jules Joseph Lefebvre. He quickly earned recognition in Paris. While living overseas, he sent his paintings to British exhibitions, where they were warmly met by public and critics. Upon return to England, Sheard became Professor of Art at Queens College in London. Overall Sheard has had 199 exhibitions at the Royal Society of British Artists and 27 exhibitions at The Royal Academy. He also exhibited at The New English Arts Club, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Institute, Glasgow Institute, The London Salon, and Royal Miniature Society. Many of Thomas Sheard's works are in regional British museums.
His oriental paintings often include enormous crowd scenes and groups of people, particularly in busy city marketplaces and bazaars, and are painted from an elevated vantage point that gives the impression of a movie panorama. Sheard was an exact contemporary of the Impressionists, and while he never embraced their broken brushwork technique. His paintings have strong atmosphere, intense color, and dazzling lighting effects.
