After City had won their first game of the season with a brilliant win at AFC Bournemouth, the Minstermen followed this up with their first home win of the campaign.
The visitors to Bootham Crescent were newly-promoted Shrewsbury Town, and manager Alan Little had freshened up his team line-up to great success at Dean Court with Paul Atkin coming in for Wayne Hall, and young midfield prospect Scott Jordan giving a starting place ahead of Steve Bushell.
City went in front when Steve Cooper’s cross caused Shrews keeper Tim Clarke and defender Mark Hughes to get in each other’s way, leaving a grateful Paul Barnes to tap the ball into the net.
York were rampant in the second half, Cooper and Barnes opening up the defence allowing Nigel Pepper the space to double City’s lead. Then the Minstermen added a third when a mazy run by Jon McCarthy ended with a great ball into the near post, where substitute Glenn Naylor was waiting to head home.
The final whistle blew on a 3-0 victory, and York City’s season was now up and running.
York City: Kiely, McMillan, Atkin, Pepper, Tutill, Barras (Hall), McCarthy, Cooper (Naylor), Barnes, Jordan, Canham.
