Prime Minister inagurates the Phase - I of Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, covering a distance of 520 Kms and connecting Nagpur and Shirdi on 11th December 2022.
Samruddhi Mahamarg or Nagpur-Mumbai Super Communication Expressway project, is a major step towards realising Prime Minister’s vision of improved connectivity and infrastructure across the country.
The 701 Km expressway - being built at an cost of about Rs 55,000 crore - is one of India's longest expressways, passing through Maharashtra’s 10 districts and prominent urban regions of Amravati, Aurangabad and Nashik. The expressway will also help improve the connectivity of adjoining 14 other districts, thus helping in development of about 24 districts of the state including the regions of Vidarbha, Marathwada and North Maharashtra.
Espousing Prime Minister’s vision of integrated planning and coordinated implementation of infrastructure connectivity projects under PM Gati Shakti, the Samruddhi Mahamarg will connect to the Delhi Mumbai Expressway, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust and tourist locations like Ajanta Ellora Caves, Shirdi, Verul, Lonar, etc. Samruddhi Mahamarg will be a game-changer in providing a major boost to economic development of Maharashtra.
This greenfield project was first announced in 2015 and land acquisition began in July 2017. Its foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2018, and construction work started in January 2019 for 16 civil packages. The expressway’s first phase (Nagpur – Shirdi) has been opened and Entire Expressway will be operational by 2023-end as per MSRDC Officials.
The 6 lane expressway is 120m broad and is designed for a top speed of 150 kmph (But Permissible Speed would be 120 kmph).
The expressway connects the districts of Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Buldhana, Aurangabad, Jalna, Ahmednagar, Nashik and Thane.
Its route passes through 3 wildlife sanctuaries. To protect wildlife, several overpasses, underpasses and high culverts will be built. The expressway features a 310m bridge over river Wardha, 33 major bridges, 274 minor bridges, 65 viaducts/flyovers and six tunnels through the Western Ghats. The longest tunnel is being built at Kasara Ghat, Igatpuri.
